The increasing importance of our duty towards our environment is frequently in my mind. As a countryside custodian I am concerned by the very lack of concern among so many of the population about the state of our country and the way in which we treat our towns and countryside.
Just as it is now impossible to go down a main road or Motorway without seeing litter that has been thrown from cars and trucks all along the side, so it is hard to see a river without plastic sacks and other detritus swept into the nooks and crannies of the riverbank.
The more people that fish, the more people will care. The correlation between a love of nature and care for the well being of ones surroundings and its inhabitants is without challenge. Fishing and fishing associations have played an enormous part in improving and monitoring the quality of our rivers, streams and lakes.
The fisheries department of the Environment Agency, responsible for maintaining and improving our fisheries, is partly funded by charging a licence fee to fish on any inland water in England or Wales. Fly Fishing for Fun is delighted to be able to offer, as a part of the Starter Kit, a FREE trout fishing licence to Juniors (12 - 16 yr olds) for their first year’s fishing. This initiative is supported by the Environment Agency, who are also keen to encourage more young people to start fishing.
To find out more about what the Agency does visit their Angling Page. |
It is nature itself, the condition of the rivers, their inhabitants and dependents which will give us the clearest indications of the health of our environment. If more people can be persuaded to get out and fish, then the army of custodians will increase and give our environment a far greater chance for a future.
Fishing uses no electricity.
Fishing equipment, if properly chosen, is not discarded after a few months as so many things are in our buy cheap now, chuck later, buy another society, but is likely to stay with you a lifetime and even be passed to other generations. You will find very little fishing paraphernalia in a landfill site.
Walking a river bank or a lakeshore is surely so much healthier for all concerned than sitting in front of a television or Playstation. As a sport fishing contributes nothing to the increasingly heavy carbon dioxide blanket that is raising our global temperatures.
